MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)

Smooth, uniform wood fiber panel, MDF is valued for its flatness, paintability, and machining consistency. Dense faces deliver sharp milled details and reliable support for primers and finish coats. Edges machine cleanly; sealing edges prevents fiber "raising."

Intended for dry indoor use, MDF can swell with moisture if unsealed. Screw-holding is moderate: plan for pilot holes and coarse threads. Stock thicknesses: 3/8" (≈9.5 mm) and 1/2" (≈12.7 mm). In CNC cutting, small holding tabs may be left for precision.

What is MDF?

Made by pressing refined wood fibers with resin, MDF forms a dense, homogeneous panel. Result: Very smooth faces, uniform density to the core, and predictable tool behavior—advantages for painted finishes, milled profiles, and parts requiring consistent edges and good flatness.

Surface and Finish

Paint: Closed fibers that accept primer well and deliver quality painted finish. Seal edges/profiles before finish coat to limit porosity and fiber raising.

Veneers/laminates: Accepts decorative laminates and veneers; balance front/back to limit cupping on large panels.

Color/texture: Pale brown with fine grain, may vary slightly between batches.

Service Environment

Dry indoor use; sensitive to moisture. Unsealed edges or one-sided coating can cause swelling or "cupping." Seal all faces/edges if moisture may vary.

Temperature: Normal ambient temperature recommended; avoid sustained heat or vapor.

Loads: Non-structural panel; size spans and add supports to control deflection.

Machining and Fastening

Milling/drilling: Clean machining with carbide tools; low feeds and sharp edges improve edge quality and reduce fuzz.

Sawing: Clean edges; support fine cuts to limit chipping on small offcuts.

Screws: Moderate holding; use pilot holes, coarse or double-thread screws, and sufficient edge distances. For repeated assemblies, consider inserts or through-bolting.

Dust: Generates fine dust—appropriate extraction and PPE recommended.

Common Applications

Cabinetry and furniture: Door panels, drawer fronts/backs, dividers, shelves (short spans with support), baseboards, and milled moldings. Commercial fit-out: Display panels, sign backs, risers, and paint-ready wall coverings.
